The size of the screwdriver and allen keys depends on the size of your adjustment screws, so it pays to have a few different options near at hand.
What Parts Of UPVC Windows Can You Adjust?
There are 2 main areas you can adjust UPVC windows: the hinges and the locks. Each can be adjusted to ensure the windows are aligned correctly, improve security and reduce draughts. You can also inspect and clean the window seals, but any damage to the seals will require professional assistance.
How To Adjust UPVC Window Hinges
Before you begin adjusting your UPVC windows, you need to make sure that they are clean to avoid grit or dirt getting into the hinges or locking mechanism. Use the soapy water and cloth to wipe down the windows and remove any debris.
Once this is done you can start the adjustment. Depending on whether you have traditional casement windows, a top hung UPVC window or a bottom hung window, the hinges will be on a different area. You can find the hinge side by opening the windows, the area where the windows hang is where the hinges are.
Most modern UPVC windows have hinges that include lateral or height adjustment slots, which screw clockwise to tighten using an allen key.
For tilt and turn UPVC windows, there will be multiple adjustment points on the middle and side hinges, which you will need to tighten.
How To Adjust UPVC Window Locks
In some cases, you may need to use a screwdriver, allen key or even a pair of pliers to adjust the height and position of the locking mechanism to ensure the window locks fully when closed.
UPVC windows have metal mushroom-shaped pins or rollers, known as cams, located just behind the locking mechanism, so open the window and inspect the inside of the frame to find these.
Use a screwdriver to remove the plastic barrier in front of the cams, and then use the allen keys or pliers to tighten them by turning the adjustment screws clockwise.

UPVC windows can last between 20 and 35 years, but only if they are high-quality and installed correctly. Older UPVC windows may get issues such as broken seals, which can reduce their efficiency.
